Alejandro Zendejas expressed hope that his injury is “nothing serious” following his two-goal performance that propelled Club América past Pachuca in the Liga MX quarterfinal.
After a goalless first leg, the U.S. men’s national team winger proved pivotal in Saturday’s second leg as América secured a 2-0 victory.
Zendejas broke the deadlock in the 16th minute, capitalizing on a deflected effort to hammer a left-footed shot low into the far corner.
The 27-year-old then scored again just 12 minutes later, executing a stunning sliding volley from the back post following a cross from Kevin Álvarez.
However, in the 87th minute, Zendejas appeared to sustain a hamstring injury. He sat down on the pitch and had to be substituted, receiving a standing ovation from the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes crowd.
After the match, Zendejas conveyed optimism about being fit for the semifinal as América aims for a fourth consecutive Liga MX title.
“I’m calm. I managed to stop when I felt something might happen. I don’t think it’s anything serious, but I’ll undergo tests to rule out any issues,” he told TUDN.
Las Águilas will face the winner of the match between León and Cruz Azul in the semifinal. The two teams will clash on Sunday, with Cruz Azul holding a 3-2 edge from the first leg.
“Honestly, regardless of who we face, we focus on our situation, and that was evident in this match,” Zendejas stated.
