Xabi Alonso is on track to take the helm as Liverpool’s head coach, with reports indicating a verbal agreement has been reached as the Reds prepare to part ways with Arne Slot at the season’s end.
The club made significant investments in the summer transfer market, exceeding £400m to support Slot after his successful debut season, where he won the Premier League title.
This season’s performances have, however, fallen short of expectations. Liverpool currently sits sixth in the Premier League, only three points adrift of third-placed Manchester United. They remain in contention for both the FA Cup and Champions League.
Reports suggest that Slot’s position is precarious. If Liverpool fails to secure a Champions League spot, he could be ousted from Anfield.
Yet, Spanish outlet OKDiario reports that Alonso, a former Liverpool midfielder who recently parted ways with Real Madrid, has already agreed to a three-year contract. The only way for Slot to overturn this agreement would be to win the Champions League.
According to the report, “Xabi Alonso has a verbal agreement to coach Liverpool starting in June. This agreement could be voided if Arne Slot claims the Champions League title this season.”
OKDiario also revealed that initial discussions between Liverpool and Alonso’s representatives began back in November 2025, amidst mounting scrutiny on the latter’s position in Madrid.
Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke asserts that Slot’s dismissal is contingent on Liverpool’s Champions League qualification. Failure to achieve this would have significant financial implications.
O’Rourke stated, “The only scenario where Slot would be dismissed is if Liverpool fails to secure a Champions League spot. This would represent a considerable setback for the club financialy and impact player morale, as top players aim to compete in the Champions League.”
He also emphasized that Liverpool’s recent performance against Wolves was a squandered opportunity to increase pressure on rivals for the Champions League spots.
Liverpool’s fanbase is increasingly discontent with the team’s performances this season. Much hinges on Arne Slot’s ability to navigate the remaining matches effectively, possibly finishing in the top four or securing silverware, whether it be a cup or the Champions League trophy.
However, the season has been marked by disappointment.
