Clarke’s Rampant Scots Deliver Reality Check to History-Making Curacao

Scotland finished their final home fixture before departing for the 2026 World Cup in North America with a resounding 4-1 victory over Curacao. Despite an early scare at Hampden Park, Steve Clarke’s side utilized their numerical advantage to secure a morale-boosting win in front of the Tartan Army.

The visitors, who are preparing to make history as the smallest nation ever to compete in a World Cup finals, initially stunned the home crowd. Former Manchester United winger Tahith Chong, now under the guidance of veteran manager Dick Advocaat, silenced the stadium with a clinical opening goal. However, the momentum of the contest shifted dramatically following a disciplinary lapse from Jurgen Locadia, whose dismissal left the Caribbean side vulnerable for the remainder of the match.

Scotland took full advantage of the extra man. Findlay Curtis sparked the comeback with an equalizer before Lawrence Shankland netted a brace. A late penalty from Ryan Christie put the finishing touches on a dominant second-half performance.

Tartan Army Rallies to Overpower Curacao After Early Setback

Steve Clarke, who recently solidified his long-term future with a contract extension through 2030, saw his side fall behind in the 17th minute. The Scottish defense struggled to track a direct ball over the top, allowing Tahith Chong to exploit the space. Showing the poise that has defined his recent club form, Chong bypassed a defender before drilling a low, left-footed strike off the post and into the net.

The complexion of the game changed when Locadia was penalized for an off-the-ball elbow on Aaron Hickey. While initially cautioned, a VAR intervention resulted in the yellow card being upgraded to a red, forcing Curacao to defend their lead with only ten players. Scotland’s rhythm was momentarily disrupted when Billy Gilmour was forced off with an injury, but his replacement, Findlay Curtis, provided the perfect response. Just before the interval, Curtis found a pocket of space and fired a precise shot through a defender’s legs to beat goalkeeper Eloy Room at the far post.

The second half was a story of sustained Scottish pressure. Room produced several fine saves to deny both Shankland and Christie, but the pressure eventually told. Scotland regained the lead through a brilliantly executed corner routine; Christie delivered a sharp low cross to the near post, where Shankland was on hand to redirect the ball home.

Shankland, the clinical new Rangers forward, doubled his tally shortly after, finishing a chance created by Lyndon Dykes. The scoring was completed nine minutes from time when Curtis was brought down in the area by a reckless sliding tackle. Ryan Christie, who had been instrumental in Scotland’s creative play throughout the evening, stepped up to coolly send Room the wrong way from the penalty spot.

This victory provides Steve Clarke with plenty of positives as the squad prepares for the global stage. While the injury to Billy Gilmour remains a point of concern, the clinical nature of the second-half performance suggests that Scotland’s attacking options are finding their form at exactly the right time. As the team shifts its focus to the North American tournament, this comeback win at Hampden Park serves as a vital stepping stone in their World Cup preparations.
