Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez may face a substantial suspension after engaging with fans in the stands following Uruguay’s Copa America semi-final loss to Colombia on Wednesday.

Nunez was one of the Uruguayan players who went into the stands after the match in Charlotte, USA, where he appeared to become involved in disputes with fans dressed in Colombia’s yellow jerseys.

Conmebol, the governing body of South American football, responded with a statement: “Conmebol strongly condemns any acts of violence that impact football. Our mission is based on the belief that football connects us and unites us through its positive values.

“There is no place for intolerance and violence, both on and off the field. We urge everyone in the remaining days to focus their passion on supporting their teams and enjoying an unforgettable celebration.”

Nunez’s management has been contacted for a response.

A scuffle broke out behind the Uruguay bench, as a group of fans clashed with the larger contingent of Colombian supporters, resulting in drinks being thrown.

Authorities intervened to restore calm after over ten minutes, with some Uruguayan fans and team personnel remaining on the field.

A goal in the 39th minute by Jefferson Lerma was the decisive factor, even with Colombia playing a man down after Daniel Munoz received a red card just before halftime.

Uruguay’s captain, Jose Maria Gimenez, stated the players’ actions were an attempt to protect their families.

“Let me make a point before they cut me off because they’re not allowing us to speak on the microphone and don’t want me to address what’s happening. This is a disaster,” Gimenez said during the official broadcast.

“Please be cautious; our families are in the stands, including newborns. It was a disaster; there was no security, and we had to protect our families.”
