The North Carolina Courage have made a significant decision by transferring their midfielder and team captain, Denise O’Sullivan, to Liverpool, marking the end of an impressive nearly nine-year tenure with the Courage. The specifics regarding the transfer fee remain undisclosed.
Denise O’Sullivan stands as North Carolina’s all-time appearance leader with 186 across various competitions. Her tenure has seen her contribute to an outstanding legacy, helping the Courage secure three NWSL Shields and two NWSL Championships, along with two Challenge Cups. O’Sullivan joined the Courage in 2017, becoming a vital part of the franchise’s competitive ascent.
Between 2017 and 2019, the Courage experienced a dominant period, claiming three consecutive Shields and clinching the NWSL Championship title in both 2018 and 2019. In 2018, the team suffered only one defeat while securing the league’s titles and the inaugural Women’s International Champions Cup—a significant precursor to the upcoming Club World Cup.
“It’s hard to express my feelings about what this club has truly meant to me,” O’Sullivan shared in a statement. “North Carolina will always feel like home, and I remain incredibly thankful to the club, my teammates, and the exceptional supporters who have stood by me throughout my journey. Although I am moving on to a new challenge, I will always be part of Courage Country. Thank you for everything.”
As she transitions to Liverpool, O’Sullivan joins a team facing the uphill challenge of avoiding relegation in the Women’s Super League, the premier women’s soccer league in England.
Liverpool is currently winless, having played 12 matches this season and earning just 4 points. They find themselves at the bottom of the league, in a precarious position as they fight against relegation, with West Ham just slightly ahead with 5 points.
Rumors of potential transfers to England had surrounded O’Sullivan in previous windows. She mentioned on Liverpool’s club website that this move holds particular significance for her larger family, who will now be just a short flight away.
O’Sullivan has represented Ireland on the international stage and played a key role in helping her country qualify for the Women’s World Cup for the very first time in 2023.
Initially arriving at the Courage in 2017 through a waiver wire pickup after being released by the Houston Dash mid-season, O’Sullivan found immediate success upon joining the team.
At the start of the 2023 season, O’Sullivan was honored as the second captain in the history of the North Carolina franchise, which was originally established as the Western New York Flash.
“Denise has been an essential figure at this club from the beginning, shaping what it means to be a Courage player,” noted Ceri Bowley, chief soccer officer for North Carolina, who joined the club last year. “Her leadership, both on and off the pitch, and the standards she set for herself and her teammates will undoubtedly define her legacy. While we will miss her, we wholeheartedly support her desire to be closer to home and wish her all the success in her next chapter.”
Before her time in the NWSL, which began with the Dash, O’Sullivan played in various leagues in Ireland and Scotland, recognizing considerable success during her career.
O’Sullivan has made appearances in the UEFA Women’s Champions League with several clubs and was integral to the Glasgow City team that reached the quarterfinals in the 2014-15 campaign, making them the first Scottish club to accomplish such a feat.
During her time at Glasgow City, the team secured three consecutive Scottish league titles along with multiple cup victories.
In addition to her club career, she also went on loan to Australia twice during the NWSL off-seasons and had a brief stint in the Women’s Super League while on loan to Brighton in 2020, which allowed her to compete internationally for Ireland during a challenging period worldwide.
