Dominik Szoboszlai is urging Liverpool to step up their game, stressing the critical need for improvement. He warned that if performances don’t change in the Premier League, the team could find itself in the Conference League rather than the Champions League next season.
Last season’s champions faced a disappointing 1-1 draw against a struggling Tottenham team, with Richarlison equalizing in injury time at Anfield.
This marks the eighth instance this season where Liverpool has conceded goals after the 90th minute, blowing a significant chance to climb into the top four after unfavored results from Aston Villa and Chelsea.
Szoboszlai, who had initially given Liverpool a lead with a superb direct free kick, found it hard to explain this alarming trend of conceding late goals. Former defender Jamie Carragher, commenting on Sky Sports just before Richarlison’s equalizer, noted that Liverpool seemed to be “asleep at the wheel” while dropping crucial points.
Szoboszlai acknowledged the need for urgency, stating, “We have to wake up. If we keep going like this, next season we should be happy if we end up in the Conference League.”
“In the first half, we played quite well and controlled the game. Tottenham hardly created any opportunities. Yet, in the second half, we didn’t replicate that form,” he added.
“The big question is why? We will sit down and discuss this. It’s a challenging time. We need to stand united.”
Despite arriving at Anfield with twelve senior players sidelined and on a four-match losing streak under Igor Tudor, Tottenham earned a deserved point that reflected the disappointing display from Liverpool, leading to boos echoing around Anfield after the final whistle.
“I didn’t hear the boos, but I can understand the frustration. Last season we were champions, and this season, our performances aren’t meeting expectations,” Szoboszlai said.
“Fans should continue to support us because last season, when we were champions with four games left, there was joy. We need that support during these tougher times.”
Roy Keane cautioned that significant issues plague Liverpool and highlighted that something crucial is missing from last season’s champions. Carragher criticized Liverpool’s performance as “poor.”
“No offense to Tottenham, but they’re arguably the weakest team in the Premier League at this moment, especially over the past couple of months,” he remarked. “Playing them at home, with the motivation from their recent results, you would expect a better performance. But this lackluster showing has been a consistent theme all season.”
“The major question facing everyone is whether this stems from the manager or the composition of the squad. Could a new manager breathe life back into these players, reintroducing the needed energy and intensity? I have my doubts.”
“Much of this could be traced back to last summer, considering the player profiles brought into the team. There are just too many players who only seem to want to deliver when the ball is at their feet. It appears they shy away from challenging plays, making it too easy for opponents to face Liverpool.”
