Enzo Fernandez has candidly shared the grueling reality of competing in the sweltering heat at the Club World Cup.
Fernandez is gearing up for Chelsea’s pivotal match on Sunday, where they stand just 90 minutes away from the chance to be crowned world champions against Paris Saint-Germain.
The Blues have fought their way to the final at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, overcoming Benfica and Palmeiras before a remarkable performance by Joao Pedro led to a victory over Fluminense in the semifinals.
However, as has been the trend throughout the tournament, the pre-match conditions have posed significant challenges, with East Coast temperatures hitting peaks of 34°C.
“Honestly, the heat is incredible,” Fernandez remarked. “The other day I felt a bit dizzy during play. I had to lie down because I was really lightheaded.
“Competing in these conditions is quite dangerous, not only for the players but also for the spectators at the stadium and those watching at home. The pace of the game is not the same; everything becomes slower.
“Let’s hope next year they reconsider the scheduling, at least to ensure that it remains an enjoyable and attractive spectacle for football fans, right?”
Earlier in the tournament, Enzo Maresca noted that Chelsea had to keep their training sessions in Philadelphia to “very short” durations due to temperatures soaring to 37°C.
The heat has consistently overshadowed the Club World Cup, with both fans and players commenting on how it diminishes the enjoyment of the matches.
Nevertheless, Chelsea continues to prepare for the challenging encounter against the European champions on Sunday, who are in excellent form following their decisive win over Real Madrid.
Fernandez provided a positive update on injuries, confirming that Moises Caicedo is “fine” and “definitely going to train” after twisting his ankle against Fluminense.
Despite some critics of the tournament, Fernandez maintains that winning the title would be monumental for the club.
“This title is very significant for the club,” he added. “It’s crucial to compete with the best clubs globally, and we see it as an important achievement for Chelsea. We will endeavor to prepare as thoroughly as possible for the match.”
The final of the Club World Cup signifies the conclusion of what has been a seemingly endless season for Chelsea, extending over 329 days by Sunday.
After spending a month away from his family, Fernandez is eager to enjoy some well-deserved time off from football.
“Honestly, I’ve accomplished some wonderful things personally, but being in a hotel for a month hasn’t been easy,” he said. “As you know, spending time with family is very important to me whenever I can.”
Chelsea’s decisive clash with PSG is set to kick off at 8pm BST or 3pm local time, with the sun expected to bake the roofless MetLife Stadium.
