Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand recently weighed in on Kobbie Mainoo’s challenging situation at Old Trafford, asserting that it’s time for the young midfielder to move on next year.
Mainoo faces an uncertain future as he heads into January, having been relegated to a minor role under head coach Ruben Amorim over the past year.
This marks a significant decline for the player, who experienced a remarkable breakout season for both club and country in 2023/24.
Amorim seems to favor Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, leaving Mainoo with minimal playing time off the bench.
This lack of opportunity led Mainoo to seek a transfer over the summer, a request that INEOS did not entertain at the time. However, as circumstances remain unchanged, an exit appears increasingly likely this winter, with club icons Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt advocating for his departure.
Ferdinand echoed their sentiments, stating, “I saw Butty and Scholesy discussing this on their podcast, and I completely resonate with them. If I were in Kobbie Mainoo’s shoes, I would be looking to leave. It’s imperative.” He shared on his YouTube channel.
“He represented England and was outstanding in the tournament. Not many can claim that. Unfortunately, he has now wasted a year and a half of his career at Manchester United.”
“He’s probably extended his stay by six months too long. His agent and family need to step up and protect his future.”
Ferdinand further urged Mainoo and his agent to candidly recognize that he is no longer a priority at United.
“He might be thinking that he loves Manchester United too much to leave and wants to fight for his spot,” Ferdinand added.
“But soon it’ll be two years, and losing that much time in a career is detrimental. It’s a short path, and important decisions must be made.”
“If I were in his position, I’d say the manager isn’t likely to give me more game time. If I haven’t featured in past matches, chances are I won’t be chosen moving forward.”
“Let’s be straightforward. I am surplus to requirements; it’s time to find a new opportunity.”
