D.C. United kicked off the 2025 MLS SuperDraft by selecting defender Nikola Markovic from NC State with the top pick. Markovic, a centerback with additional experience in MLS Next Pro with CF Montreal, faces the crucial challenge of strengthening a defense that has struggled; D.C. allowed 66 goals last season, making them one of the most vulnerable teams in the league. The club brought in striker Tai Baribo from the Philadelphia Union to fill the void left by Christian Benteke, but securing solid defensive options is equally important as they navigate a rebuilding year.
As one of four underclassmen signing a Generation Adidas contract, Markovic became eligible for the draft after his sophomore year, during which he earned the title of ACC Defensive Player of the Year and led his NC State team to an appearance in the NCAA College Cup championship. D.C. United expects Markovic to step into the first team immediately. He missed the MLS Combine due to NCAA commitments, but D.C. United ensured they scouted him closely by sending a coach to monitor his progress.
D.C. United Managing Director of Soccer Operations Dr. Erkut Sogut emphasized the importance of bolstering both defense and attack. “What Nikola brought to the table was not just his performance on the field, but also his leadership qualities, which we value immensely,” Sogut noted. “Character and leadership scouting played significant roles in our decision.”
Under new head coach Rene Weiler, D.C. United aims to adopt a high-tempo playing style that emphasizes pressing and quick transitions—a style that Markovic believes aligns with his skill set. The focus on character becomes even more vital as the team undergoes significant changes, both in its coaching staff and roster.
“I know D.C. United has a rich history, and I’m excited to contribute to that. I believe we can achieve great things together. After speaking with the staff, I have faith in their vision and feel like they have a solid plan for my development,” Markovic mentioned, exuding enthusiasm for joining the franchise.
The drafting frenzy continued as D.C. United traded up to secure the New England Revolution’s eighth overall pick, using it to select forward Richie Aman from Washington. This move not only strengthens their attacking options but also relieves some of the pressure on Markovic and the defense, even though he seems ready to rise to the occasion.
