Owen Hargreaves is making quite the bold statement about Manchester United, claiming they have their own version of Mohamed Salah and a fresh George Best ready to shine alongside their “ridiculous” teammate.
Under Michael Carrick, the Red Devils have surged to four straight victories since he took over as caretaker manager, following Ruben Amorim’s departure.
In their latest clash, United defeated Tottenham 2-0, thanks to goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes. Spurs’ Cristian Romero added to their troubles by receiving a red card for a reckless challenge on Casemiro.
Fernandes’ late strike not only sealed the victory but also marked his 200th goal contribution in just 314 Premier League appearances, making him the second-fastest player to achieve this feat after Wayne Rooney.
Hargreaves heaped praise on Fernandes, describing his stats as “Playstation numbers.”
“Let’s be honest, 200 goal involvements is remarkable. They’re Playstation numbers,” he said during a segment on TNT Sports.
“He plays with a level of risk that ultimately benefits the team. Kobbie [Mainoo] was exceptional again, and Casemiro… those three were probably the standout performers in this match, in my view.”
“Before Carrick took over, we noted that midfield was a weak link, but this trio has truly impressed. Bruno is clearly the best player by a wide margin, and they look significantly more robust now.”
Mainoo has been a consistent presence under Carrick, starting every match since he took charge, after not getting a single start under Amorim this season. His outstanding performances have drawn comparisons to United legend George Best.
“I’ve never seen Kobbie play poorly. His talent is undeniable. This club prides itself on developing young players, and he’s one of the finest examples,” Hargreaves noted.
“He exudes the flair and risk reminiscent of George Best. Whether it’s a simple touch or a daring run, he plays as if he’s just enjoying a game with his friends.”
“This speaks volumes of his character. He’s so adept on the ball and remarkably humble. He’s destined for greatness.”
Mbeumo, on the other hand, found the net for the third time in four matches under Carrick, executing a brilliant goal following an intricate set-piece with Fernandes and Mainoo. This brings his total to ten goals in 21 appearances this season.
Previously, he mainly occupied the right flank under Amorim. Now, he’s making waves down the center under Carrick, leaving Benjamin Sesko on the sidelines. Hargreaves noted that Mbeumo shares qualities with Liverpool’s star, Mo Salah.
“At 26, he has all the tools. He’s a natural finisher,” Hargreaves added.
“Earlier this season, I drew comparisons to Salah. He’s a composed finisher in crucial situations and maintains an even-keeled demeanor—an attribute I greatly admire.”
