Harvey Elliott stated that he had to prioritize himself when making the tough choice to leave Liverpool, yet he emphasized that his love for the club he supported in his youth will remain lifelong.
The midfielder has transferred to Aston Villa on a loan deal that will culminate in a £35m purchase. He made his debut as a substitute during Saturday’s goalless draw against Everton.
Elliott believes that he will grow significantly under the guidance of Unai Emery, expressing that he has been “blown away” by the Villa manager and recognizing that he can only enhance his skills through playing.
Though he was part of the squad that secured the Premier League title last season, he only started two league matches—these occurring after the championship had already been clinched—which led him to conclude that he needed to depart from Anfield.
“I loved every minute of it; every second, every day,” said Elliott, who made his move to Liverpool from Fulham in 2020. “I wouldn’t change it; I learned so much during my time there and went through numerous experiences.
“However, the most crucial factor during my decision-making process was the need to play first-team football. I have to be part of a team that offers me regular game time, whether that means starting or coming off the bench. Knowing I’ll get to play on matchdays is essential for my development.
“My affection for Liverpool will always remain, and that won’t change. I’ll be following their journey from a distance, wishing them all the best. But in football, you have to sometimes think of yourself. I chose to leave because I wanted what was best for my career.”
Elliott received interest from several clubs, including RB Leipzig, Fulham, and West Ham, but although Villa has yet to win this season, he sees great potential in the team.
“Choosing the right club involved making several difficult decisions,” he remarked. “I am thrilled to be here and eager to help propel this club to where it rightfully belongs. With this team, the possibilities are endless.”
Elliott mentioned that it was Emery’s influence that swayed him to sign with Villa, noting his admiration for the Spaniard in their short time working together.
“It’s his dedication to football, his energy, and passion that stand out. Additionally, it’s about the attention to detail and the compassion he shows towards all of us. From our very first conversation, I was impressed by his demeanor and what he shared about my potential.
“As weeks pass, you understand it increasingly well. He’s a caring mentor who consistently looks out for us and ensures we’re alright. He strives to support us as players, and I believe that working under him will be immensely beneficial for me, provided he has faith in me.”
Elliott understands that he faces stiff competition for a position in the Villa midfield, with Emery’s other options—when fit—being Boubacar Kamara, Amadou Onana, Youri Tielemans, John McGinn, and Morgan Rogers.
“I relish the process of having to earn my spot in a strong team,” he said. “I’ll face that challenge at Villa; this won’t be an easy ride where I simply step in. I need to fight for the badge and demonstrate my capabilities on the field.”
