How One Tactical Shift Undid Arsenal in the Carabao Cup Final

Everyone has routines. In a world shaped by chaos, these routines provide a framework and a sense of purpose.

Your morning commute—from choosing the coffee blend to knowing the best spot on the platform—is a routine.

Jake Humphrey’s foundational habits represent a routine, a means to silence the noise in his head.

Meanwhile, Premier League defenders regularly play out from the back, inviting the opposition to press them, hoping to shift the ball quickly to their midfielders.

But what happens when those routines get interrupted? Can the mind adapt and react to unexpected challenges?

In Arsenal’s case during the 2-0 League Cup final loss to Manchester City, the response was a resounding ‘no’.

Confused by City’s choice to forgo pressing their backline, opting instead to block passing lanes, Arsenal’s defenders and goalkeeper showed visible uncertainty as they hesitantly exchanged passes.

Most Premier League teams employ a mid-block defensively, tempting opponents to attempt long balls. City’s approach was a more aggressive version of this, something Arsenal wasn’t ready for.

William Saliba and Gabriel are capable defenders, but they seemed unable to adapt and think outside their usual patterns.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was chosen over David Raya, frequently resorted to launching the ball aimlessly, resulting in lost opportunities.

This tactical shift from Pep Guardiola illustrated his ongoing prowess in management, as he celebrated each goal enthusiastically.

Yet, this single tactical decision laid bare Arsenal’s weaknesses and raised questions about Mikel Arteta’s planning.

No attempts were made to draw Declan Rice or Martin Zubimendi deeper to regain control, nor did the team switch tactics to disrupt City’s game plan.

No risks were taken by Saliba, Gabriel, or Kepa. Any deviation from their usual routines led to confusion and hesitation.

This illustrates how much Arteta’s tactical style is imprinted on his players through training.

The Gunners currently lead the Premier League title race by nine points but appeared one-dimensional in this matchup.

“It was disappointing, especially for our players and supporters because we really aimed to lift that trophy today,” Arteta expressed after the match.

“The first half was particularly notable as we played better and created the best chances, yet we didn’t capitalize.”

“Credit to them for their performance. It was a deeply disappointing day.”

Arsenal’s unbeaten streak, which had lasted since mid-January, has come to an end. Arteta now has two weeks to reflect before facing Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

“We had eight fantastic months with this team,” said Arteta. “Today is certainly a setback.”

“We must channel that fire in our bellies over the next two months to secure an outstanding season.”

This represents one of Arteta’s biggest tests in terms of managing his players. Losing a final is tough, but losing when victory never seemed possible is even harder.

Previous discussions have highlighted Arsenal’s basic attacking strategies and excessive dependence on set-pieces. While success is still within reach, a broader tactical repertoire is necessary.

Perhaps Arteta should incorporate more creativity into his pre-planned strategies. While routines provide stability, over-reliance on them can lead to predictability.
