Inter Miami’s head coach Javier Mascherano has chosen to sidestep questions concerning Lionel Messi’s contract status with the team. The 38-year-old forward is nearing the end of his current agreement with the Herons, which will conclude at the year’s end.
During a press conference prior to the match against D.C. United, Mascherano refrained from commenting on speculations that a renewal for the iconic player is on the horizon. While the Argentine manager expressed hope for a favorable resolution in Messi’s contract discussions, he avoided making any firm assertions regarding a new contract.
“I’m not going to speak about hypotheticals, and I’m certainly not the one who should make that announcement. Hopefully it happens soon. It would be fantastic news not only for the club but for MLS and soccer in the United States as a whole. We just have to let things take their natural course and allow those who need to announce it to do so”, he said via GOAL.
Lionel Messi made his move to Inter Miami from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2023 and has since clinched two titles during his tenure with the MLS club. He entered into a two-and-a-half-year contract in Florida and has quickly become the team’s key figure, holding the title of their all-time leading scorer.
Recently, there have been discussions about a potential return to Europe for Messi, with preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup being cited as a motivating factor for a rumored transfer. As reported by ESPN (via BR Football), Messi is expected to ink a multi-year contract with Inter Miami before his existing deal expires in December. The new agreement will guarantee his presence at the club well beyond the upcoming FIFA World Cup next summer.
Messi is currently the reigning MLS MVP, having received the accolade for the 2024 season after leading Inter Miami to victory in the Supporters Shield. The former Barcelona forward has netted 20 goals in 21 MLS matches this season and is set to guide his team into the playoffs for a second consecutive year.
