Kobbie Mainoo’s Transfer Journey: Why He’s Choosing Clarity Amid Frustration And A Bargain Fee

Reports indicate that Kobbie Mainoo has formulated a stance on his transfer ‘preference,’ expressing that he is ‘deeply frustrated’ at Manchester United.

The future of the England international is now uncertain as he has slipped down the hierarchy at Man Utd.

Mainoo had a standout breakout season in 2023/24, emerging as one of Europe’s top young talents; however, he has faced a significant decline over the past year due to injury problems and a downturn in form.

Ruben Amorim does not seem entirely convinced by Mainoo, as the midfielder has played a limited role since his arrival, raising questions about his compatibility with the coach’s favored 3-4-3 formation.

In January, Man Utd showed willingness to allow Mainoo to depart as they aimed for profit-driven sales to balance their finances, attracting the attention of Chelsea, who would reportedly need to pay £70m for his signature.

It comes as no surprise that Chelsea opted not to pursue Mainoo at that price, and recent reports suggest that Man Utd has softened their financial demands.

Speculation around Mainoo has intensified lately, especially as he has not featured in Manchester United’s first two Premier League matches of the 2025/26 season.

Earlier this week, well-respected journalist David Ornstein disclosed that Mainoo is receptive to departing Man Utd, with The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell offering further insights on Wednesday morning.

Whitwell reports that Mainoo is ‘deeply frustrated’ after being overlooked by Amorim at the season’s onset, with his ‘preference’ leaning towards a move to a ‘European club’ amid surprising interest from Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

He also noted that Manchester United has ‘considered the possibility of selling Mainoo throughout the summer,’ and while there is a belief that he still has ‘areas for improvement,’ ‘individuals at Old Trafford anticipate he will remain at United beyond next week’s transfer deadline.’

Despite the ongoing situation, Whitwell has also highlighted that Manchester United has chosen to reduce their asking price for Mainoo.

‘Mainoo is believed to prefer a move to the continent rather than staying within the Premier League — he previously looked into opportunities in Germany while progressing through United’s academy — even though there has been interest closer to home.

‘When Chelsea approached about his availability during the January transfer window, officials at Stamford Bridge were met with a £70 million demand. There is now a belief that United would consider offers around £45 million, possibly even lower as the deadline approaches.’
