Gary Lineker’s criticism of England head coach Thomas Tuchel is generating significant buzz. Tuchel’s recent decision to select Ben White over Trent Alexander-Arnold has raised eyebrows and has been labeled “insulting” by the legendary forward.
As England’s head coach, Tuchel hasn’t shied away from tough calls. His latest move omits Real Madrid’s Alexander-Arnold from the 35-man squad for the upcoming international fixtures.
Despite a rocky start to his tenure at Real Madrid, Alexander-Arnold likely expected a call-up, especially with Reece James on the injured list.
Instead, Tuchel opted for Newcastle’s Tino Livramento and Arsenal’s White. White, who has had a tumultuous relationship with the England squad since his fallout with former assistant Steve Holland in 2022, has seen limited playing time at the club level this season.
This controversial selection hasn’t gone unnoticed, prompting a chorus of pundits to voice their disapproval. Lineker, a staunch supporter of Alexander-Arnold, offered his take on the situation during an episode of The Rest is Football podcast.
“I’m a huge fan of Trent,” he stated. “There seems to be a personal issue here. Football-wise, there’s no argument. It’s hard to understand why he isn’t included, as he can enhance your chances, even from the bench.”
Lineker speculated that Tuchel may harbor some personal reservations about the right-back. He questioned whether it’s related to Alexander-Arnold’s attitude or defensive skills, suggesting that there’s more to this omission than meets the eye.
“It doesn’t add up. Players who have filled his position do not come close to matching his competency, particularly with the ball. In crucial matches, you need someone with a spark to create opportunities, and he provides that.”
Lineker did not shy away from critiquing the choice of White. He expressed his disdain for Tuchel’s decision, stating, “When considering the players selected, it feels quite dismissive. Ben White’s history of not wanting to represent England complicates things, but it doesn’t justify his selection over Trent, who deserves better treatment.”
David Beckham has joined the chorus in affirming Tuchel’s misstep. He commented on talkSPORT regarding Alexander-Arnold’s exclusion: “Throughout his career, he’s faced criticism for being better offensively than defensively. However, you have to recognize that even exceptional defenders can shine in attack. Roberto Carlos exemplified that; he was both a phenomenal defender and an attacking threat. I would find it hard to justify leaving someone like Trent out of the squad.”
The discussion is far from over, as fans eagerly await Tuchel’s next moves and the impact on the team dynamics.
