David Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami, has praised Lionel Messi after his stellar performance in the 3-1 victory over Orlando City in the League Cup semifinal. The Herons found themselves trailing just before halftime due to a goal from Marco Pasalic.
However, the Argentine star made his mark in the second half, leveling the score from the penalty spot in the 77th minute. Messi then propelled Inter Miami into the lead in the 88th minute, with Telasco Segovia confirming the win in the first minute of second-half injury time.
Although Beckham was not present at the game, enjoying a family holiday elsewhere, he was clearly thrilled with the match’s outcome.
Following the victory, Beckham took to social media to share a photo of Messi celebrating a goal, captioning it:
“Our Leader💗”
He further lauded the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner in another post, stating:
“There is only one 💗”
Notably, Inter Miami clinched the League Cup in 2023 following Messi’s arrival at Chase Stadium, marking the first trophy in the club’s history. The Florida-based team is set to face Seattle Sounders in the League Cup final on Sunday, August 31, at Lumen Field.
How many trophies has Lionel Messi won with Inter Miami to date?
Lionel Messi is the most decorated footballer globally, boasting 46 trophies to date, including two with Inter Miami. The Argentine joined Chase Stadium in the summer of 2023 after finishing his contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
He kicked off his tenure by guiding the Herons to their first League Cup trophy. Last season, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also contributed to winning the Supporters Shield, helping the team finish atop the MLS Eastern Conference.
Unfortunately, in his debut year, Messi was unable to lead Inter Miami to an MLS Cup victory. However, he has continued his impressive form this campaign, already netting 25 goals and assisting on 11 more across 32 matches in all competitions.
La Pulga is now eyeing the chance to expand his trophy collection this weekend, with the MLS Cup also within reach this season. Notably, he is in the final six months of his contract with the MLS club and has not yet signed an extension.
