Luis Diaz has departed from Liverpool to sign with Bayern Munich for a fee of £65.5 million.
The 28-year-old has agreed to a four-year contract with the German champions, stepping in to fill the spot left by Leroy Sane in Vincent Kompany’s team.
Liverpool initially dismissed an offer of £58.5 million but later accepted a higher bid after Bayern continued to pursue the player, who expressed a desire to leave the club.
Diaz had first requested a departure from Liverpool last summer. Despite the club’s efforts to secure him with an extended contract, the Colombian sought a salary far exceeding what the team was willing to provide.
Coach Arne Slot omitted him from Saturday’s 4-2 loss against AC Milan as the transfer progressed. Diaz departed Liverpool’s squad in Tokyo on Monday to join Bayern and complete his medical examination.
During his time at Liverpool, Diaz netted 41 goals in 148 appearances, contributing 17 goals last season as he helped the team clinch the Premier League title. He also secured two Carabao Cups and the FA Cup while playing at Anfield and participated in the 2022 Champions League final.
This transfer marks Diaz as the third-largest sale in Liverpool’s history, following Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez, both of whom moved to Barcelona. The Merseyside club made a profit of £22.5 million on him, having acquired him from Porto for £43 million.
With this move, Liverpool has generated approximately £130 million this summer from transfers involving Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid, Caoimhin Kelleher to Brentford, and Nat Phillips to West Brom.
Further player sales may be on the horizon, with potential departures including Darwin Nunez, Federico Chiesa, Harvey Elliott, Ben Doak, and Tyler Morton.
Meanwhile, their expenditure on new acquisitions like Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez totals around £250 million, in addition to the signing of goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, whose transfer from Valencia was arranged last summer.
