Manchester United has completed the acquisition of Bryan Mbeumo for an initial fee of £65m, bringing Ruben Amorim’s summer investment in forwards to over £120m.
The Cameroonian international’s fee could rise to £71m if performance-related add-ons are met, and he has put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the option for an additional year at Old Trafford.
Mbeumo, who netted 20 Premier League goals for Brentford last term, joins the highly sought-after Matheus Cunha, a £62.5m addition, as Amorim reshapes his attacking lineup, successfully securing his primary targets in all key positions.
At 25 years old, Mbeumo was courted by Newcastle and Tottenham but remained steadfast in his desire to join United, stating he has been a fan of the club since childhood.
He expressed: “As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up.”
“My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday. I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here, learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.”
“Everybody told me about the environment being created here and the exciting plans for the future. This is a massive club, with an incredible stadium and amazing fans. We are all really determined to challenge for the biggest trophies.”
United had two prior offers for Mbeumo turned down as Brentford sought a higher price, but the London club accepted a club-record fee when the Europa League finalists returned with a third proposal last week.
Mbeumo is expected to join United on their pre-season trip to the United States and becomes Amorim’s third summer signing, following Cunha and teenage Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon.
Only Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak, and Erling Haaland scored more Premier League goals than Mbeumo last season, and over the past three years, he ranks seventh for goal contributions. Director of football Jason Wilcox noted the forward’s impressive output in this regard.
He commented: “Bryan’s goals and assists record in the Premier League is exceptional; his remarkable consistency has positioned him among the most productive players in England over the last three seasons.”
“Bryan’s commitment to our project and his eagerness to join the club confirmed that he was the ideal fit for Manchester United and the culture we are cultivating.”
“We are thrilled to have secured another one of our key targets ahead of the pre-season tour. The experience in the US will be an excellent opportunity for Bryan to collaborate with Ruben and integrate with his new teammates as we prepare for an exciting season ahead.”
