One of the final signings made by Arsene Wenger may very well become a central figure on the guest list for Arsenal’s upcoming trophy parade.
“He’s not ready to play for us. We’ll send him out on loan,” Wenger remarked about Konstantinos Mavropanos back in January 2018.
This was before a change in direction that saw the Greek defender make his Premier League debut against Manchester United that April. He followed up with a stellar performance in a 5-0 win over Burnley, though he ended his first season dramatically with a costly mistake and a red card early in the match against Leicester.
Mavropanos never quite met Arsenal’s expectations. He made only five additional appearances before being loaned out three times and eventually sold for a modest profit in the summer of 2022.
Yet, his legacy with the Gunners was significantly enhanced by a standout display against Manchester City.
From his towering header that equalized the match to his skillful handling of Erling Haaland, this game marked the peak of Mavropanos’ evolution from scapegoat to cult hero.
No player made more clearances than Mavropanos (10), and his four blocked shots were one more than all 28 other players combined. He showcased exceptional determination with three additional blocks after the 89th minute.
For one of those, he absorbed a blow from the ball with his face, yet managed to carry on, adding to the dramatic narrative of his performance.
Jarrod Bowen praised the 28-year-old, highlighting his speed, physicality, willingness to take risks, and his unique contributions on the field.
Mavropanos delivered just that. As Haaland finally found the moment he had been searching for throughout the match, Mavropanos stood unyielding in his defense.
This was a stark contrast to Riccardo Calafiori’s spontaneous brilliance showcased hours earlier, yet equally effective at disrupting the opponent’s efforts and ultimately benefiting Arsenal.
After he coolly converted the shootout-winning penalty against Brentford with remarkable composure, Mavropanos fully rehabilitated his image in the eyes of the West Ham supporters, with the defining moment of the game etched in everyone’s memory.
Wenger likely could not have foreseen Mavropanos becoming a key player in the Gunners’ Premier League campaign when he joined a center-back lineup featuring Rob Holding, Calum Chambers, Per Mertesacker, and Sead Kolasinac.
But he has morphed into a leader capable of bolstering Arsenal’s title aspirations while simultaneously playing a vital role in West Ham’s survival quest. Mavro-thanos is making his mark.
