Arsenal sensation Max Dowman has made waves by becoming the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history. Remarkably, he’s even younger than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were when they first netted in senior football.
The 16-year-old is already being hailed as one of the most promising talents of his generation, and from what we’ve seen in his early appearances, it’s clear to understand the hype.
In a nail-biting encounter, Arsenal seemed poised to drop crucial points against Everton after being held for 88 minutes. Their inability to generate opportunities was palpable until Dowman stepped onto the pitch, appearing as the team’s most dynamic and capable attacker.
He played a decisive part in breaking the deadlock, delivering a pinpoint cross that set up Viktor Gyokeres for the opener. Just moments later, Dowman etched his name into Premier League history.
Taking advantage of Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s decision to venture forward for a corner, Dowman displayed remarkable composure. After reclaiming the ball in his own half, he swiftly navigated around his defender and sprinted towards an open net, securing his goal with ease.
With this accomplishment, he shattered a long-standing Premier League record, which had been held for over 20 years. James Vaughan was the previous record-holder, having scored at age 16 years and 270 days back in April 2005.
Dowman, who only celebrated his 16th birthday in December, has already made his mark in Mikel Arteta’s first-team setup. His professional journey began at just 15 years old, and he continues to impress.
Arteta expressed his excitement: “It was amazing, one of those moments that will resonate for a long time. I truly appreciated the relentless determination of the team. Each action built towards our goal, culminating in such a thrilling finish. Max’s goal, in particular, turned that night into a memorable occasion.”
The coach added that many years from now, fans will recall being at the Emirates when a 16-year-old kid scored in such a pivotal match, driving the team closer to the title.
Looking at Dowman’s accomplishment, comparisons are inevitable with other youthful prodigies like Yamal, the all-time leading goalscorer in La Liga, Wayne Rooney—who stormed onto the scene at 16—and the legendary Messi and Ronaldo.
Incredibly, Dowman is about 18 months younger than both Messi and Ronaldo were when they first found the net for Barcelona and Sporting, respectively.
Of course, the journey is far from over for this Arsenal starlet, but what an incredible beginning.
