ESPN FC and ESPN UK

Inter Miami’s star player, Lionel Messi, made headlines once again in the MLS by scoring twice during their emphatic 4-0 victory over Atlanta United. This win not only secured three vital points for the Herons but also reinforced their standing in the playoffs, showcasing Messi’s exceptional talent on the field.

Messi was given a pass from Argentina’s national team coach, Lionel Scaloni, allowing him to compete in this crucial match against Atlanta United. With these two goals, Messi has now set a record for the most matches in MLS history where he has scored more than once in a single regular season. The match against Atlanta marks the ninth occasion he has accomplished this feat for Inter Miami this season.

The head coach for Argentina’s U20 team, Javier Mascherano, included Messi in the lineup against a team that had previously knocked them out of last year’s playoffs. His Argentina teammates were present in the stands, eager to see him shine in what was their final home game of the regular season.

Messi ignited the scoring with a classic curling shot from the edge of the box, putting Inter Miami ahead in the first half. He later finished the game in style, completing a move initiated by Jordi Alba mere minutes before the final whistle.

With this latest performance, Messi has taken the lead in the race for the MLS Golden Boot, bringing his season total to 26 goals—two ahead of Los Angeles FC’s Denis Bouanga. This victory also marked a significant milestone for Inter Miami, as they achieved home and away wins against Atlanta United for the first time since 2020.
