San Diego Wave and Kailen Sheridan Part Ways: A New Chapter Unfolds

The San Diego Wave FC has reached a significant turning point with goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan.

Her contract, originally set to run through the 2026 National Women’s Soccer League season, has been mutually terminated after months of consideration.

Sheridan, who signed a four-year extension with the club in July 2023, leaves behind a legacy that emphasizes her contributions to this growing franchise.

“Kailen has been an essential part of this club from day one,” stated San Diego Wave FC Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton. “After discussions, it became clear that parting ways was the best decision for everyone involved. We appreciate her significant contributions to this club and this city and wish her nothing but success in her future endeavors.”

At the close of the team’s roster decisions, Sheridan remained the only goalkeeper under contract, a point that raises curiosity about the organization’s next moves. Currently, there are no additional goalkeeper signings reported, but the Wave indicated ongoing conversations with DiDi Haračić regarding her return, as she remains a free agent.

Sheridan’s journey with the Wave commenced in 2022, tallying a striking 86 regular-season appearances throughout her tenure. She played a crucial role in the team’s accomplishments, helping secure the NWSL Shield in 2023 and the NWSL Challenge Cup in 2024. Her debut season also earned her the NWSL’s Goalkeeper of the Year title, along with a spot on the Best XI first team.

Before her time in San Diego, Sheridan broke into the professional scene with Sky Blue FC, rebranded as Gotham FC. From 2017 to 2021, she fortified their defense in 80 regular-season appearances.

Diving into her accolades, while with Gotham, she clinched both the NWSL Challenge Cup Golden Glove in 2020 and the Best XI nod in 2021.

Internationally, Sheridan protects the Canadian national team’s goal, racking up 63 appearances. She was a key player on Canada’s Olympic gold medal squad in 2021 and shone at the 2022 Concacaf W Championship, earning the Golden Glove and a place on the Best XI for the tournament.
