Seven Premier League Teams? The Pathway to Next Season’s Champions League Glory.

Next season’s Champions League could feature an impressive seven clubs from the Premier League if everything aligns perfectly.

Last season saw a remarkable six English teams qualify for Europe’s main stage; five secured their spots through the league standings, and Tottenham added their name by winning the Europa League.

This year, the Premier League stands to gain even more from the expansion of the Champions League to 36 teams, effective from the 2024/25 season.

As in previous years, the top four clubs in the Premier League will automatically clinch a place in the 2026/27 Champions League, but once again, England appears set to secure an additional berth.

This coveted fifth slot is awarded to one of the two nations that perform best in the European competitions each season, and currently, England holds a strong lead over Germany, Portugal, Spain, and Italy.

This means England is likely to grab that extra spot, allowing the top five teams to qualify for next season’s Champions League instead of just the usual four. Newcastle, for example, benefited from this rule last season, as their final match loss was less impactful after Chelsea climbed to fourth place.

It’s feasible that the Premier League could have as many as five slots by season’s end. However, securing spots six and seven involves some hopeful scenarios.

A sixth position at Europe’s most elite level is possible if an English team outside the top five triumphs in this season’s tournament.

This is not an unrealistic expectation, as all six Premier League teams remain in the last-16 of the Champions League.

The tournament winner earns an automatic qualification for the subsequent year’s edition, but if that winning team already qualifies through league placement, the nation does not gain an additional spot.

Thus, it falls to one of the league’s lower-performing clubs to conquer Europe, and the Premier League has its fair share of candidates. Tottenham is grappling with a relegation battle, while Newcastle finds itself in the bottom half of the table despite still being in contention for European qualification. Liverpool and Chelsea are also in a fierce fight for fifth place, which means that one may miss out on Champions League action altogether come season’s end.

Moreover, the winner of the Europa League gets a Champions League spot as well, suggesting that with all these scenarios aligning, the Premier League’s tally could rise to seven qualified teams.

Aston Villa, having excelled in the league phase, is currently one of the favorites to clinch the Europa League title and will continue its pursuit against Lille in the last-16.

However, since Villa currently sits third in the Premier League, they would need to win the Europa League without jeopardizing their top-five finish to provide a seventh spot for England.

The pressure isn’t solely on Villa.

Nottingham Forest, who are struggling at the bottom of the Premier League, have also advanced to the knockout rounds after defeating Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce.

If Forest claims the Europa League, it would ensure that English clubs take a record-breaking seven of the 36 places in next year’s Champions League.
