Son Heung-Min’s Arrival at LAFC Sparks Excitement Among Korean Fans and Transforms the Team

Son Heung-Min’s Impact on LAFC and the Korean Community

Since his transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Los Angeles FC during the summer transfer window, Son Heung-Min has made an impressive mark on the field. With an outstanding record of 10 goals and three assists since his debut in August, Son has helped LAFC attain one of the league’s best records, sharing the top spot with Inter Miami. However, his influence extends beyond the pitch.

A New Era of Representation

Bringing a South Korean player to a city with the largest Korean population in the U.S. has amplified representation and energized the local community. The Tigers Supporters Group, established even before LAFC’s inception, has seen renewed interest as fans rally behind Son. “Our Korean friends and family, who had previously shown little support, are now attending matches,” noted Tigers member Sam Ko. “This has allowed us to showcase our pride every time we gather at BMO stadium.”

Fellow Tigers supporter Daniel “Deech” Chung emphasized the noticeable growth in new Korean fans at matches. “It’s heartwarming to see Korean flags waved in the stands. It’s a cultural unification that even my dad, who was indifferent towards LAFC, now acknowledges as significant,” he shared.

LAFC’s Cultural Connectivity

As the city gears up to host World Cup matches in 2026, LAFC recognizes the importance of cultural connection. Although Son is not the first South Korean player with the club (that honor goes to Kim Moon-Hwan), his arrival signifies a deeper commitment to the community’s representation. The club previously made headlines by signing notable player Carlos Vela, establishing its dedication to embracing diverse cultures authentically.

LAFC’s history includes a roster of international stars like Giorgio Chiellini and Gareth Bale. Yet, none have garnered the same fervor that Son has sparked in such a short time. According to co-president Larry Freedman, “Sonny blends seamlessly with the club’s culture and resonates deeply with the Korean American community.”

The Social Fabric of LAFC’s Community

Within LAFC’s dedicated supporter group, 3252, a collaboration among diverse supporters’ groups flourishes. As the club aims for its second MLS Cup victory since 2022, this unity reflects their success on the field and commitment to cultural representation. The upcoming playoff series highlights LAFC’s collaborations, such as a groundbreaking partnership with HYBE to host a fan celebration featuring Korean culture—from K-pop to local culinary vendors—at BMO Stadium.

“The growing appreciation for K-pop and Korean culture is incredible,” Deech expressed. “It’s an unexpected, yet welcomed, elevation for our community.”

Preparing for the 2026 World Cup

As LAFC prepares for the World Cup atmosphere, it stands as a blueprint of what to expect when the world converges in 2026. Freedman remarked, “For eight seasons, we’ve been trying to engage those who typically shy away from sports. Once they experience the energy and excitement of our matches, many find themselves wanting to return.”

With the ongoing influx of global stars, especially post-Lionel Messi’s arrival in 2023, the MLS is poised to utilize the World Cup as a platform for growth. Ko aptly noted, “While winning matters, it’s equally about how soccer fosters community and unity.”

Ultimately, as LAFC embraces this transformative moment, its impact reaches beyond just athletics. The legacy of community pride and cultural connection, perhaps symbolized through Son, will endure long after individual players depart.
