Title Race Turmoil: City Falter in Everton Epic as the Door Swings Open for Arsenal

The Premier League title race took another dramatic turn on Monday night as Everton played the role of spoiler, holding Manchester City to a chaotic 3-3 draw. In a season defined by razor-thin margins, Pep Guardiola’s side found themselves clawing back from the brink of a disastrous defeat, eventually rescuing a point that nonetheless feels like a victory for league leaders Arsenal.

The match began with Manchester City dictating the tempo, though they struggled to break down a resolute Everton block. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 43rd minute through Jeremy Doku. The Belgian winger had initially seen a promising move break down when he lost his footing inside the area, but Everton failed to clear their lines effectively. Doku stayed alert, gathered the recycled possession, and unleashed a clinical strike from the edge of the box to give the champions a deserved lead heading into the interval.

However, the second half told a different story. City’s control of the match began to evaporate, and Everton grew in confidence. The equalizer arrived in the 68th minute under controversial circumstances. Marc Guehi gained possession for the Toffees but, under pressure, attempted a risky back-pass to goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Thierno Barry, who had been in an offside position when the phase began, pounced on the loose ball and converted from close range.

While the assistant referee initially flagged for offside, a VAR review overturned the decision. The officials determined that because Guehi had intentionally played and gained control of the ball, a new phase of play had started, effectively “resetting” Barry’s position. It was a technicality that left the City defense frustrated and shifted the momentum entirely in Everton’s favor.

The Toffees capitalized on City’s disorientation almost immediately. In the 73rd minute, Jake O’Brien rose highest to power home a header from a corner, turning the game on its head. Things went from bad to worse for the visitors in the 81st minute. Mateo Kovacic, brought on to provide stability, missed a crucial tackle in midfield, allowing Everton to break with speed. Barry was the beneficiary once again, clinical in his finish to secure a brace and put Everton 3-1 up.

With their title hopes flickering, City responded with typical urgency. Erling Haaland, who had been largely anonymous for most of the match—registering minimal touches in the box—finally found the net straight from the ensuing kickoff. It was a reminder of his predatory instincts, even when his overall involvement in the buildup play remains a point of tactical debate this season.

The drama peaked in stoppage time. In a desperate bid to find an equalizer, City earned a late corner that even saw Donnarumma venture forward into the opposition box. While the goalkeeper didn’t get the touch, the chaos in the box allowed the ball to fall to Doku. In a mirror image of his first-half goal, the winger struck a low, powerful shot from the edge of the area to make it 3-3 with the final kick of the game.

For Arsenal, the result is a massive boost. The Gunners now hold a five-point cushion at the summit. While Manchester City still possess a game in hand, the psychological weight of dropping points at this stage of the campaign cannot be understated. The race is no longer entirely in City’s hands; they now require Arsenal to stumble in the final weeks.
