Manchester United is laser-focused on rejuvenating their midfield this summer, as reports indicate they’ve trimmed their initial shortlist to five key names, with a Bundesliga talent in high regard by Jason Wilcox and Christopher Vivell.

The urgency to sign a midfielder has escalated, with Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba emerging as primary targets, each carrying a price tag of at least £70 million. This signals that a substantial chunk of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s transfer budget will be dedicated to bolstering this vital area.

The return of Kobbie Mainoo to the starting XI, especially after Ruben Amorim’s exit, has been a positive development under interim manager Michael Carrick. Yet, issues persist. Manuel Ugarte has been underwhelming, and with Casemiro set to depart at the end of the 2025/26 season, reinforcement in midfield becomes essential.

In more transfer insights, United may be looking to secure two quality midfielders. The previous extensive shortlist of eight to twelve options has now been refined to five, according to transfer insider Ben Jacobs.

During a chat with The United Stand (via Give Me Sport), Jacobs highlighted that Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller and Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali have joined the discussion alongside the previously mentioned Premier League names.

Jacobs noted, “Two months back, they were eyeing between 8 and 12 potential signings. Now, the focus is narrowed to targets like Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, as well as possibly Angelo Stiller and Sandro Tonali.”

The objective this summer revolves around securing two players from this targeted group to forge a robust midfield pairing. While other options may surface, the club’s leadership understands that failing to acquire these top priorities would necessitate a search for alternatives.

Stiller may be a lesser-known option without prior Premier League experience, but he has garnered appreciation from recruitment director Christopher Vivell and director of football Jason Wilcox. Jacobs stated, “Angelo Stiller is central to Manchester United’s plans and comes highly regarded by both Vivell and Wilcox.”

Conversely, Newcastle’s Tonali remains an intriguing prospect. He has been linked to Arsenal, especially after being reportedly “offered” to them on transfer deadline day. Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness emphasized that United should not be dismissed in the race for him, particularly if they secure Champions League qualification.

Wyness elaborated on the Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast: “It would be a substantial loss for Newcastle. They’ve stood by him through personal challenges, and he undoubtedly respects that.”

“Still, players must consider their paths, and these decisions arise from multiple factors, dating back to Michael Carrick’s influence. If United clinch a spot in the Champions League, it could be the pivotal aspect leading Tonali to Old Trafford. The threat of Newcastle missing out on that elite competition is significant.”

“Tonali desires Champions League involvement, and that might very well sway his decision.”
